The Amazing Mermaid

My story The Amazing Mermaid just came out in Mythaxis magazine!

Despite the title, this is not a fantasy story, but a crime story–This is Mythaxis’ annual crime issue.

The story started out as a fantasy story. It is in the same universe as my story Skin Deep, which is a new thing for me. Well, technically, I suppose any story in the regular universe counts as “in the same universe” but this story includes settings and characters from the earlier story. I think I did this because I’d done a ton of research on side shows for the first story, but didn’t really spend as much time at the location as I wanted.

The story was rejected as a fantasy story, but the editor of Mythaxis told me about the crime issue and asked if I’d rewrite the story as a straight crime story (there was already crime in the fantasy story). I’d not done a straight crime story before, so thought it would be fun to try.

Update: I just discovered that there is also an audio version of the story as well! Very very cool.
