Baen Award and Dragon Con

Update: Story is now available to read here.

Whelp…so I am now officially an “award winning author.” I got to stand up in front of people and they gave me this really cool glass trophy! My ego would probably be expanding through the roof except for the person following me around, continuously whispering “thou art mortal.”

Actually, that might be Anna.

The reason the trophy is glowing blue is that it was hard to get a good photo of the words, so I put it on a light to make it easier to read. And I left it on the light because, well, because it’s cool, and not because I like to stare at it in the middle of the night. Nope, nope, nope1

The story is supposed to go up on the Baen website sometime this month. I will post a link when that happens.

Dragon Con was insane! 80,000 people across five hotels and a couple of convention centers. At any given time there were dozens of panels on writing, fandom, costuming, science, space, security, you-name-it. We saw several really cool panels, and might have seen more, but it was difficult getting from place to place (there were times when you were just stuck, unable to move, because of all the people–and other times when it was fairly easy to get around).

There were also a lot of people in hall costumes. I lost count of the number of Deadpools and Beetlejuices (Beetlejice?), and a lot of costumes related to fandoms that I just didn’t recognize, but tons of fun and clever costumes. I didn’t take as many pictures as I would have liked–you’d see something cool, but then it would be gone before you had a chance to react, but here are a few I did get:

1I should get over myself as soon as the next rejection letter arrives–or Anna decides that the award is a good weight for a bludgeon…2
2Which is not really fair. She’s the one who encourages me all the time, while I whine about how terrible a writer I am.

  1. Congratulations again, Arlen! Wow, those are some cool costumes … and I’m surprised how many I recognized!
It’s crude but I have to go there … wouldn’t the plural of Beetlejuice be Beetlejizz?
    Cheers!
