In Which Our Hero Is Turned Into a Plant…

I already talked about my story in the Jack Chalker Well World series anthology Permutations. Well, as part of the marketing campaign, the editor and publishing company decided to do some cute little intro videos for some of the stories.

The only problem–the main character of my story is a plant (Yes, sounds riveting, doesn’t it, but he does have a strong internal life :-).

I also had to record the intro to the story for the video which is not my strongest skill set. I can do straight readings, but they wanted me to “emote” and other “acting” stuff like that. Method actor that I am, I tried standing really still for several hours while birds landed on me and squirrels ran up my leg. Didn’t really help my reading, and the laundry bill was huge.

Finally, I had to call in the expert. I had my sister Dany (who is really good at this stuff) work with me. The result was better–the editor accepted that version. And I’ve now been offered a part on Broadway as “second potted plant on the left.”

Here’s the video:

  1. WOW … This is SO COOL! I mean, I guess we’ve all wondered what it would be like to be a plant, and your description is FANTASTIC! Things I certainly never would have thought of … you really take us inside his “head” (or lack thereof). THANK YOU for sharing this. And I thought your reading of it was great. 🙂
